Kokin (…) Slendro deals with spatial aspects of sound, both at the level of the physical objects that embody it and at the level of cultural or geographic spaces that music can generate. As a whole, it triggers our representation of remote or “exotic” places and the complexity of trans-cultural relationships. The installation consists of a series of six islands, which are constructed then placed on vinyl records. These international landscapes slowly revolve while the music corresponding to each nation plays around them. Each turntable is positioned a few meters away from the others in the exhibition space, allowing the visitors to move freely among each one and hear the surrounding music clearly.
